313.16(a)(1)
On September 27, 2023 at approximately 1150 CSI REDACTED (I) was observing stunning (HATS Category VIII) during slaughter operations at Caledonia Packing. The stunner was using a .20 gauge shotgun to stun a large sow. After the first shot was fired, the sow vocalized, was standing upright, and moved back a few paces. The stunner immediately grabbed the captive bolt device, jumped down into the knock box, and delivered a second stun to the back of the head behind the sows left ear. With the sow still standing, the stunner immediately reloaded the device and delivered the third stun to the back of the sow’s head behind the left ear, which rendered the sow unconscious. A regulatory control action was taken and Reject tag NO. B-45 746561 was placed on the knock box. Observation of the sow’s head revealed the gunshot hole off center, to the right side of the animal’s head. This is a violation of regulation 313.16(a)(1) Immediate unconsciousness (gunshot.) I notified the owner, REDACTED, of the forthcoming non-compliance. The reject tag was removed from the knock box and the establishment was allowed to resume operations.
