Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category IV: Ante-mortem Inspection On Wednesday, July 12th, at approximately 1445 hours, the SPHV observed a black corriente cow stick her head between two bars on the back fence panel of west alley 4. The cow attempted to back out immediately but became lodged in the fence due to her horns. After approximately 1 minute of the Pen's Employee and Pen’s Manager attempting to free the cow's head, establishment personnel elected to stun the animal in the pens. I did not observe the cow show signs of distress or injury, and the stun was correctly performed. No regulatory control action was taken due to the observed immediate and effective corrective actions. After consulting with the FLS and a Denver District DVMS, it was determined that this situation was an incident of noncompliance due to unnecessary openings where the head, feet or legs of an animal may be injured. The Plant Manager was verbally notified of the forthcoming noncompliance. A similar incident involving a heifer getting her head stuck in a fence occurred on 02/20/2023 and was documented in MOI KJN3416025720I. This establishment operates under a Robust Systematic Approach to Slaughter and Humane Handling of Livestock.
