At approximately 0930 hours on 4/15/2023, I, Dr. REDACTED, FLS, was performing HATS Category VI – Electric Prod/Alternative Object Use at the chute to the stunning box when I observed the following 9 CFR 313.2(b) noncompliance. An establishment employee with a yellow hat was holding a raddle paddle in his left hand and an electric prod in his right hand. I followed behind the employee while he moved market hogs through the single file chute to the stunning box. One of the market hogs stopped before the last back stop gate to the stunning box. The employee used the raddle paddle a few times to encourage the hog to move forward. The hog did not move. The employee then applied the electric prod below the tail on the hog’s anus, which is a sensitive area. The hog vocalized and ran forward. I removed the electric prod from the employee and notified Barn Supervisor Mr. REDACTED. I applied U.S. Rejected tag NO. B45503538 on the door of the chute. Mr. REDACTED, Quality Control Manager was also notified of my observation. The Chicago District Office was contacted, and a Notice of Suspension was issued for the egregious event.
