Non-Compliance Description:

HATS category VIII- Stunning Effectiveness On March 8, 2023 at approximately 12:20pm the following Humane Handling noncompliance was observed. An Angus steer was standing freely in the stun box. The first stunning attempt was unsuccessful as observed when the steer jumped and tossed its head with the captive bolt loosely get stuck in the head. The captive bolt fell to the ground and the steer remained standing. A different establishment employee who was standing close by and saw what was happening immediately picked up the backup captive bolt and delivered a second shot, rendering the steer unconscious. Evaluation of the head showed two holes in the poll area, with one being off center, therefore confirming the inadequate first stunning attempt. No regulatory control action was taken as immediate corrective action was taken by the establishment. Mr. REDACTED (Slaughter Floor Manager) was notified of the noncompliance. This is a noncompliance of 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1).

Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category VIII Stunning Effectiveness On November 1, 2022, at approximately 0745hours, at Establishment M-21265, Smucker’s Meats, while Food Inspector REDACTED was inspecting swine slaughter, the following noncompliance was observed: The stunning operator used an electrical stunner on a market hog and then opened the lift gate. The initial stunning attempt was ineffective, as evidenced by the animal showing that he was still conscious by standing back up under his own power and trying to leave the stunning area. No regulatory control action was taken as an establishment employee took the immediate correction action of performing a successful second stunning attempt, utilizing the electrical stunning device for a head-stun and rendering the hog insensible. The animal remained insensible thereafter. Mr. REDACTED, Plant Owner, was notified of the noncompliance.
