Non-Compliance Description:

On March 17, 2023, at approximately 12:39 pm, I, Dr. REDACTED, observed the following non-compliance. While performing HATS category III, water availability, I noticed in Pen 4 on the side that is shared with the alley, a broken vertical piece of wire from the fence. The wire was broken at the top and extended into the pen over the water tub. The wire is approximately 3 inches above the water tub edge. Animals were present in the pen; no animal had any observable injuries to the face or eyes. On Pen 3 on the side that is shared with Pen 2, a broken piece of vertical wire that was broken at the bottom and did not extend into either pen. The broken piece of wire was at the hip level of the animals in the pen. There were several missing vertical pieces in the wire panel of Pen 3. I notified Supervisor REDACTED of the broken pieces of wire. Immediately an employee broke off the pieces. According to 9 CFR 313.1(a) Livestock pens, driveways, and ramps shall be maintained in good repair. They shall be free from sharp or protruding objects which may, in the opinion of the inspector, cause injury or pain to the animals.
