HATS Category VIII Stunning Effectiveness On 8/13/2024, at approximately 1119 hours while performing a humane handling verification task, for HATS category number VIII: Stunning Effectiveness. I observed the following noncompliance. The plant was attempting to stun a hog with a firearm. This hog was in the cattle knock box. I heard the first stun attempt which was followed immediately by loud vocalization. Immediately after the unsuccessful stun, a second successful stun was applied. When the stun operator placed the gun down, Dr. REDACTED PHV and I went to the knock box area and examined the hog and confirmed it was unconscious. There were two separate bullet wounds on the skull of this hog and it was verified that the hog had moved its head at the last moment, resulting in an unsuccessful first stun. This is noncompliant with 9 CFR 313.16(a)(1 ) and 9 CFR 313.16(a) (3). I notified Mr. REDACTED slaughter floor manager, of the issue and that a noncompliance would be issued. Mr. REDACTED plant manager, was also notified of the noncompliance. A copy of the noncompliance report was provided to the establishment.
