Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category IV-Handling During Ante Mortem Inspection At approximately 0535 hours, I was performing a Humane Handling and ante-mortem check on a load of pigs. At the mid-gate of pen number 6, there was a sow that had its head stuck between the lowest two metal bars of the gate. The sow was attempting to stand and free itself, and while struggling to get its head unstuck I observed the sow's skin turning from pink to red. Plant employee immediately euthanized the animal to prevent further injury or distress to the animal, and no other animals were affected. This is in violation of regulation 9 CFR 313.1 (a) Livestock pens, driveways and ramps shall be maintained in good repair. They shall be free from sharp or protruding objects which may, in the opinion of the inspector, cause injury or pain to the animals. Loose boards, splintered or broken planking, and unnecessary openings where the head, feet, or legs of an animal may be injured shall be repaired.
