On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, while I, SPHV REDACTED, conducted a routine humane handling assessment and performed a directed humane handling task the following noncompliance was observed with HATS category VIII, stunning effectiveness: At approximately 10:42am slaughter supervisor REDACTED attempted to stun a young market goat with the electrical stunning device. Mr. REDACTED applied the wand to the head and the goat collapsed but immediately returned to it's feet. Mr. REDACTED then repositioned himself and immediately applied another stun with the electrical stunning device using the head-only method. This attempt was effective in producing unconsciousness. Mr. REDACTED applied another security stun to the head with the electrical stunning device. The goat remained unconscious throughout shackling, hoisting, and bleeding. Mr. REDACTED indicated that one of the prongs touched the animals horn instead of the head on the initial attempt. The establishment currently has a written systematic approach to humane handling that is considered robust. Mr. REDACTED, Supervisor, and Mr. REDACTED, Owner were notified of this noncompliance verbally and in writing with this noncompliance record.
