HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On Tuesday June 4, 2024, at approximately 10:57 hours, IPP observed the following events. The stun operator applied a stunning attempt on a large sow with a bolt action .22 magnum rifle. From the safe zone IPP heard the rifle discharge, then heard the sow grunt and start to vocalize. IPP heard an immediate second discharge from the same firearm. IPP entered the stunning area and observed the sow was rendered unconscious. Following exsanguination IPP inspected the head and confirmed 2 penetrating stun holes, one was approximately 1/2 inch too high but center. IPP placed US Reject tag B16498452 on the stun box and verbally informed the stun operator and slaughter personnel to halt stunning until further notice due to the observed noncompliance. The Denver District Management Team was notified through supervisory channels. The establishment operates under a robust systemic approach to the humane handling of livestock. There have been no noncompliance records issued for the same root cause in the last 90 days.

The stun operator applied a stunning attempt on a sow with a bolt action .22 magnum rifle. The SPHV heard the rifle discharge, then heard the sow vocalize afterwards. The SPHV heard an immediate second discharge from the same firearm. The SPHV entered the stunning area and observed the sow was rendered unconscious. The SPHV inspected the head after exsanguination and confirmed 2 penetrating stun holes, one was approximately 1⁄4 inch to the left of center. The SPHV placed US Reject tag B25073132 on the stun box and verbally informed the stun operator and office assistant to halt stunning until further notice due to the observed noncompliance. The Denver District Management Team was notified through supervisory channels. The establishment operates under a robust systemic approach to the humane handling of livestock. There have been no noncompliance records issued for the same root cause in the last 90 days.
