Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category VII Observation for Slips & Falls On Tuesday July 2, 2024, at approximately 1040 hours, IPP observed the following events. The establishment handler was moving a steer through the alleyway toward the stun box, while passing one of the occupied pens the cattle inside became excited, one of the cattle slipped and fell. Once the alleyway was clear the IPP observed the fallen steer while the establishment handler moved the other cattle to a fresh adjacent pen. The pen’s floor is non-grooved concrete with wood shavings applied prior to occupancy; however, as the cattle defecate the surface becomes slippery creating a hazard that fails to provide adequate footing such as with this event where the wet wood shavings had been pushed aside during the day. Once the cattle were moved, the fallen steer stood and appeared to have no visible injury to its legs and was able to walk on its own. IPP verbally informed the establishment handler and slaughter personnel to halt stunning until further notice due to the observed noncompliance. There have been no noncompliance records issued for the same root cause in the last 90 days.
