On September 3, 2024, at Oxbow Meats, Est.# M47678, at approximately 4:12pm, while preforming Livestock Humane Handling task, the following was observed by CSI REDACTED On the last animal of the day, a market swine, was moved into the knock box and was restrained by the squeeze part of the box. The initial stun with the handheld captive bolt device (HHCB) was observed contact with the animal, The knock box was as the hog remained standing and vocalizing. The stun operator was handed the backup rifle by another establishment employee. The stun operator delivered an immediate and effective corrective action stun with the rifle, rendering the animal insensible, and it remained so thereafter. The knock box was tagged number B-41805601, and Mr. REDACTED the owner was notified of the non-compliance and of the regulatory control action.

On 8/12/2024 at approximately 9:30 am, while performing a Livestock Humane Handling task at Oxbow Meats (Est. M47678), the following was observed by CSI REDACTED The second bovine of the day was moved into the knock box and restrained with the head gate. The initial stun attempt with handheld captive bolt device (HHCB) was observed to contact the animal, but was ineffective, as the animal remained standing and had conscience eye tracking movement. The stun operator promptly reloaded the HHCB device and delivered immediate and effective corrective actions, rendering the animal insensible, and it remained so thereafter. The knock box/head restrainer was tagged with FSIS reject tag B46670501, and Mr. REDACTED establishment owner, was notified of this non-compliance and of the regulatory control action.

M47678, approximately 08:32 hours, while performing a Livestock Humane Handling Verification Task, Consumer Safety Inspector REDACTED observed the following: CSI REDACTED observed the establishment move a bovine heifer into the knock box. The establishment stun operator’s initial attempt with a 22 Magnum bolt action rifle was observed to contact the animal, but was ineffective, as the animal remained standing and alert with conscious eye tracking movements. The establishment stun operator recognized the failure, reloaded the firearm, and delivered an immediate and effective corrective action stun, rendering the animal insensible, and it remained so thereafter. CSI REDACTED immediately took a regulatory action by tagging the knock box with U.S. rejected tag number B41805600, and CSI REDACTED informed establishment owners REDACTED and REDACTED verbally of the observed non-compliance and of the regulatory control action.
