HATS Category IV: Ante-mortem Inspection On Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at approximately 7:00am, while observing slaughter activities, IPP observed the following noncompliance: Est. 47615 was slaughtering market hogs. The establishment drove two hogs into the V shaped stun box that was approximately 8 feet long. The two hogs were piled on top of each other, in that one hog had its front legs and ventral abdomen in contact with and thereby on top of the other hogs back. The establishment stun operator proceeded to stun the hog on top with a hand-held captive bolt (HHCB) device, stunning the hog insensible with the first stun attempt. The insensible stunned hog proceeded to violently reflexively kick the live hog, which was standing underneath the insensible stunned hog, for approximately 30 seconds before the establishment stun operator stunned the second hog with the HHCB device, which was rendered insensible on the first stun attempt. This is in violation of 9 CFR 313.15(a)(2). The Denver District Management Team was notified through supervisory channels. IPP notified the plant manager verbally of the noncompliance and in writing with the issuance of this noncompliance report. There have been no noncompliance records issued in the past 90 days for same root cause. This establishment has implemented a robust systematic approach to the humane handling of livestock.
