Non-Compliance Description:

On 03-11-2024 while observing Humane Handling operations at The Stockyard packing company LLC, CSI REDACTED observed the following noncompliance. As the seventh animal was placed into the knock box, which was a Heifer, CSI REDACTED observed REDACTED the designated knocker placed the captive bolt gun against the head of the animal. As he attempted to knock the animal it slightly backed away and the knock was not able to render the animal senseless. Andy immediately attempted the second knock, and the animal was immediately rendered senseless. CSI REDACTED notified REDACTED (owner of the establishment) that a noncompliance would be issued as the first knock was not successful in rendering the animal unconscious. This document is a written notification of the establishments failure to comply with 9CFR 315.15(a)(1) which states (a) Application of stunners, required effect, handling. (1) The captive bolt stunners shall be applied to the livestock in accordance with this section so as to produce immediate unconsciousness in the animals before they are shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut. The animals shall be stunned in such a manner that they will be rendered unconscious with a minimum of excitement and discomfort.
