HATS category VI: Electric Prod/Alternative Object Use While performing ante-mortem inspection and the Livestock Humane Handling task at Purnell Sausage Co. (M7464) Simpsonville, KY, Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer (SVMO) REDACTED, DVM made the following observation in the holding pens of the establishment at approximately 0555 hrs. EDT: Establishment personnel were driving animals from the alleyway into the “tub” portion of the chute system leading to the restrainer for the electrical stunning of the animals. It was noted that the “rattle paddle” was not rattling and that it appeared to be in disrepair. Establishment personnel were instructed to stop using the paddle. A closer examination of the paddle in question found a section of the hard plastic “paddle” missing and a resulting sharp, pointy edge. An examination of the remaining paddles located in the holding pens available for establishment personnel use found 5 of the available 6 paddles to have broken hard plastic paddles with pieces missing and sharp edges exposed with the potential for animal injury. U.S. Rejected tag B45710167 was placed on the 5 damaged paddles. Assistant Kill Floor Supervisor REDACTED was notified of the above observation and forthcoming documentation of non-compliance with 9 CFR 313.2(c).

HATS category III: Water and Feed Availability While performing the Livestock Humane Handling task at Purnell Sausage Co. (M7464), Simpsonville, KY, Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer (SVMO) REDACTED, DVM made the following observation in the holding pens of the establishment: A load of 94 sows/market swine was received at the establishment on Thursday, October 17, 2024, between the approximate hours of 1045 to 1130 hrs. EDT. At approximately 1130 hrs. EDT Friday, October 18, 2024, 70 animals from the aforementioned load remained in line to be slaughtered for the day. No evidence of the animals being fed was observed in the holding pens. Inquiry was made to Kill Floor Supervisor REDACTEDwho was unable to provide documentation of the animals in question being fed. Supervisor REDACTED was informed of the forthcoming documentation of the non-compliance with 9 CFR 313.2(e) which states in part that animals held longer than 24 hours shall have access to feed.
