Kroll Farms Inc.: Non-Compliance to Humane Livestock Handling in 2025 (USDA)

HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness While observing swine slaughter with CSI REDACTED at est 46111, the following was observed: At approximately 0830, a market hog was loaded as per usual into the cattle slaughter chute for stunning. There is an opening in the front of the chute to provide a space for bovine head restraint. The establishment owner (Mr. REDACTED) then attempted to stun the animal using a .22 Magnum rifle. The animal loudly vocalized following the attempt and remained conscious (alert and looking around) and upright. Mr. REDACTED then attempted a second stun with the same firearm which also resulted in loud vocalization and also failed to produce unconsciousness unconsciousness (the animal was alert, looking around, and standing upright). While Mr. REDACTED was picking up another firearm for a third attempt, the animal escaped from the chute through the cattle head restraint and was running freely around on the floor with blood dripping from the bullet holes. Mr. REDACTED and plant employees were able to successfully coax the animal back into the chute, where Mr. REDACTED then administered a third shot with a 30-30 rifle. This shot was effective in producing unconsciousness. Shackling, hoisting and bleeding were then performed. The chute was then tagged with Retain Tag B15512231. Upon examination of the head after scalding, CSI REDACTED and myself noted three bullet holes to the head. This is a failure to comply with regulations 9 CFR 313.16(a)(1), 313.16 (a)(3), 313.16 (b)(1)(iii) and 313.15 (b)(1)(iii) Mr. REDACTED was notified of the noncompliance. This establishment does not have a Robust written Humane Handling Plan.
