HATS Category VII – Slips and Falls At approximately 0550 hours on 5/13/2025, I (the FLS) observed the following non-compliance while the establishment was moving cattle between pens and into the chute leading to the stunning area. Twelve (12) cattle were being sorted, and it was observed that they were moving faster than a walking pace. The floors of the holding pens were observed to be smooth concrete and there were multiple instances of the animals losing their footing, with their feet sliding briefly on the concrete. One (1) heifer was observed to fall with her chest and knees contacting the concrete. At that time, another heifer attempted to step over the animal that had fallen, making it difficult for the animal to regain her footing. No animal stepped on the fallen heifer. There was no evidence of injury or distress to the heifer, and she was able to regain her footing to stand up after approximately 4-5 seconds. The Denver District Veterinary Medical Officers and Specialist were informed of the incident. The establishment’s floor supervisor and owner were verbally informed that a written noncompliance report would be issued. A review of the establishment noncompliance history does not show any noncompliance record of the same root cause in the past 90 days.
