Non-Compliance Description:

At approximately 7:40am on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, I (Dr. REDACTED) was in the barn performing a routine humane handling task. I observed the following: There were 2 small pens (one pen containing 2 beef and one pen containing 3 beef) for which there was no access to water. In the first of these pens, the large plastic water barrel was completely without water. In the second of these pens, the large plastic water barrel, was upside down and empty. There was also a 3rd small pen (containing 2 beef), and a larger pen (containing 7 beef). There was a large plastic water barrel in each of these pens. Each barrel contained thicker, muddy water to a level of approximately 1/4" high. Mr. REDACTED (Slaughter Manager) was shown these findings. No regulatory control action was taken because he immediately provided water in each of the pens, in accordance with 9 CFR 313.2(e). Mr. REDACTED (Owner) was notified of the findings and informed that a noncompliance report would be issued. There have been no similar NRs issued in the past 90 days.

Non-Compliance Description:

At approximately 10am on Tuesday, 12/24/24, I (Dr. REDACTED, SPHV) was performing a humane handling task by observing the unloading of six cattle. The first couple of steps off of the trailer (where there was a significant amount of freshly packed snow and fecal material), were observed to be acceptable, no slips/falls. However, the following couple of steps just prior to entering the barn were on a very smooth, wet, cement surface with a slight amount of wet fecal material present. I observed two cattle, who exited the trailer together, simultaneously slip. Both of the forelegs of each animal slipped out in front of them, for approximately 18 inches. Their hindquarters then dropped, grazing the pavement, but their feet remained on the ground. They both struggled to gain balance and then rose back up to a standing position. They continued to enter the barn in a hurried fashion, walking normally. Mr. REDACTED (Slaughter Supervisor) was also present and observed the incident. He was notified that a Noncompliance Record would be issued. No regulatory control action was taken because no more animals are being unloaded today. There have been no similar Noncompliance Records issued in the past 90 days.
