HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On September 17th, 2025, approximately 0800 hours, the Consumer Safety Inspector (CSI) observed the following noncompliance at Pure Country Harvest. The CSI was in the inspection office adjacent to the harvest floor and heard a handheld captive bolt device discharge and then heard an animal bellowing. The CSI stepped outside, accompanied by the plant manager, and observed a beef steer standing and rearing up in the stun box, not in the head restraint, and bellowing. The stun operator was trying to un-jam a handheld captive bolt device he had in his hand. There was a loaded backup handheld captive bolt device next to the stun box readily available to the stun operator. The plant manager instructed the stun operator to utilize the backup device and the stun operator applied an effective stun. The CSI stopped slaughter operations and tagged the stun box with US Reject tag #B33340462. The Plant Manager was verbally notified of the forthcoming noncompliance. The District Veterinary Medical Specialists were notified through supervisory channels. No similar noncompliance has been issued in the last 90 days. This establishment operates under a robust systematic approach to the humane handling of livestock.

HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On October 8th, 2024, at approximately 1355 hours, the Food Inspector (FI) observed the following noncompliance at Pure Country Harvest. A beef was restrained in the stun box, and the FI heard the hand-held captive bolt device discharge with an abnormally weak sound. The FI stepped into position to view the animal and observed the beef remained standing in the stun box and vocalized. The FI observed a mark on the forehead of the animal's hide with a spot of blood indicating the stunning device had made contact with the animal. The stun operator immediately reached for the readily available loaded backup hand-held captive bolt device and applied a second stun attempt which effectively rendered the animal insensible. The FI stopped production and tagged the stun box with US Reject tag #B38177288. The Plant Manager was verbally notified of the forthcoming noncompliance. The District Veterinary Medical Specialist was notified through supervisory channels. No similar noncompliance has been issued in the last 90 days. This establishment operates under a robust systematic approach to the humane handling of livestock.
