On 10/01/2024, at approximately 1309 hours, while performing stunning verification activities associated with humane handling. Inspection Program Personnel (IPP) CSI REDACTED observed the following noncompliance: Three shots with a .38 special rifle were required to render a sow unconscious. After the first two consecutive shots the sow remained standing with blood draining from its head and vocalized. The establishment took immediate effective corrective actions by applying a third shot with the rifle which effectively rendered the sow unconscious. The knock box was tagged with U.S. reject tag NO. B-29 713918 and plant management was notified of the noncompliance. Upon postmortem examination of the skull, three distinct points of entry into the skull were observed.
