HATS Category VII Slips and Falls While conducting a Humane Handling Task as a CSI at establishment M2417 on April 1, 2025 at 0920 hours, I witnessed the following: While observing the livestock unloading areas and holding pens, I observed a gentleman making multiple attempts to redirect and turn a young, red-colored steer. The animal slipped and fell onto its belly with all four legs touching the ground. After the fall, the steer stood back up and walked into the holding pen. When it entered the holding pen, it again slipped and fell, with all four legs and belly touching the ground. I noted no signs of injury to the animal. After that time, I observed two market swine being unloaded. As the one pig was walking to the holding open, it slipped and fell, in a separate area from where the steer had fallen. The pig stood up and I did not note any signs of injury. I observed that the floors are not constructed in a way that gives the livestock good footing to move around on without slipping or falling. These falls were also observed by the Frontline Supervisor. I informed Mr. REDACTED (Plant Manager/Owner) of the Humane Handling concerns that had occurred at the unloading area and holding pens, and that this is a failure to comply with 9 CFR 313.1(b). These issues are creating a safety and humane handling concern and can lead to the injury of livestock.
