Non-Compliance Description:

On October 7 at 08:22 hours, while performing a "water and food availability" Humane Handling task, I observed that the pens were empty and decided to enter for further observations. During my thorough inspection, I discovered that the metal shield covering the walls of the driveway alley leading to the knocking box was rusted. The rust had caused a 5-foot-long slit in the shield with openings varying from 1 to 3 inches wide. The rust was protruding, creating sharp points that could potentially harm live animals as they are driven to the knocking box. Although no animals were in the driveway at the moment, the establishment was expecting a delivery of animals. I promptly notified establishment employee REDACTED of the issue. The establishment has an active robust systematic approach to humane handling and given the serious but non-egregious nature of the findings, I informed REDACTED that the establishment would receive a Noncompliance Record (NR). Before issuing the NR, the establishment mentioned that since they would not be slaughtering or using the pens area until after deer season, the issue would not be addressed and fixed until just before then.
