Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness At approximately 1245 hrs. on July 22, 2025, while performing online pork slaughter tasks, I heard the handheld captive bolt device (HHCB) discharge and immediately heard a hog start to squeal. I walked over to the stun area and observed that there was a standing, conscious hog squealing in the stun box with blood on its head. The stunner had already grabbed their preloaded back-up HHCB and was aiming to take a second stun. The second stun effectively rendered the animal unconscious. I observed the stunner check for signs of consciousness, then exsanguinated the hog. After the second stun, I also didn’t observe any signs of consciousness. I then rejected the stunning area by applying USDA Reject #B-45025376 to the handle of the stunning box and informed the floor manager that an NR would be issued for failure to render the animal unconscious with the first stun. This a failure to comply with regulation 313.15(a)(1). The Denver District Management Team was notified through supervisory channels. There have been no humane handling related noncompliance's in the last six months. This establishment has implemented a robust systematic approach to the humane handling of livestock.
