According to the data from the US 2020 decennial Census, in April 2020, there were 212,241 people in New Mexico who identified their race as American Indian and Alaska Native Alone, which is 10.02% of the total population of New Mexico. McKinley County had the highest number of people who identify as American Indian and Alaska Native Alone (56,941), followed by San Juan County (50,021), and Bernalillo County (38,197). On the other hand, the three counties with the least number of people who identify as American Indian and Alaska Native Alone were: Harding County (7), De Baca County (10), and Hidalgo County (40).

In terms of the percentage of each county's total population, McKinley County had the highest percentage, with 78.11% of its population identifying their race as American Indian and Alaska Native Alone, followed by Cibola County (45.05%), and San Juan County (41.12%).
