According to the data from the US 2020 decennial Census, in April 2020, there were 38,914 people in North Dakota who identified their race as American Indian and Alaska Native Alone, which is 5.00% of the total population of North Dakota. Rolette County had the highest number of people who identify as American Indian and Alaska Native Alone (9,278), followed by Burleigh County (4,257), and Sioux County (3,332). On the other hand, the three counties with the least number of people who identify as American Indian and Alaska Native Alone were: Slope County (2), Billings County (5), and Steele County (7).

In terms of the percentage of each county's total population, Sioux County had the highest percentage, with 85.48% of its population identifying their race as American Indian and Alaska Native Alone, followed by Rolette County (76.13%), and Benson County (53.92%).
