According to the US Census Bureau estimates, 1,866,004 (14.66%) of the 12,724,685 Illinois population in 2018 identified as Black or African American alone.

Cook County had the highest number of African Americans (1,239,247), and African Americans constituted 23.97% of the county's population. Other counties with high number of African Americans include: Will County (84,054) - 12.17% of the county's population, and St. Clair County (80,039) - 30.59% of the county's population.
