Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness While I was verifying stunning effectiveness, I observed the following noncompliance. A market hog was brought into the stunning cage, but was moving within the restrainer. The establishment employee attempted to stun the animal with a hand-held captive bolt device (HHCBD), but due to the movement of the animal the first and second stun attempts missed the hog completely. The third stun attempt with the HHCBD made contact with the hog but did not render it unconscious. The establishment employee immediately applied a fourth stun which successfully rendered it unconscious. The hog remained unconscious through the shackling and bleeding procedures. Regulatory control was taken by applying US reject tag # B 25 615321 to the restrainer. Denver District Management was contacted through supervisory channels. The back up stunning device was available for use during the incident. Mr. David Kim, Plant Manager, was verbally notified of the noncompliance. There have been no other non compliances for the same root cause within the past 90 days.
