Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category VIII: Ineffective stun On Tuesday December 20, 2022, 4 Market hogs were presented and passed antemortem inspection for slaughter. The hogs’ weights ranged from 220-315 lbs. The first 2 smaller hogs were stunned effectively via electrical current. The larger third hog was stunned effectively via firearm (22 caliber rifle). I observed the 4th hog being stunned at approximately 2:05 pm. The first attempt was ineffective as I observed the hog remain standing and vocalizing. The stun operator immediately chambered another shell and applied a second ineffective stun attempt hog remained standing and vocalizing. Without hesitation the stun operator chambered a third round into the same firearm and applied the third effective stun. I observed the hog collapse to the floor with no further vocalization. The hog remained unconscious while shackled, hoisted and bled. U.S. Reject tag B-25 615261 was applied to the stun box following supervisory instruction. Upon inspection of the dressed head I observed 2 non-penetrating contact points where the skull was cracked and a 3rd small penetrating hole in the skull. Establishment personnel verbally notified of the noncompliance, as establishment management was unavailable during the event. There have been no noncompliance records issued for the same root cause within the past 90 days. The Denver District Management Team was notified through supervisory channels. The establishment currently operates under a robust systematic approach to humane handling.
