313.16(b)(1)(i)
VIII Stunning Effectiveness While performing USDA Slaughter at Red Barn Meats, Inc., Establishment # 45119, I observed the following noncompliance. At approximately 0800, I observed a plant employee apply the stunning blow with a firearm to a sow weighing approximately 400 lbs. The gunshot did not render the animal insensible and immediate corrective action was taken by the plant employee applying a second stunning blow with a firearm of greater caliber. This is a failure of 9CFR 313.16(b)(1)(i) which requires correct selection of the caliber of firearms. The sow was immediately rendered insensible to pain. The sow remained insensible to pain while being stuck, shackled, and hoisted. I verbally informed plant management of the noncompliance at approximately 0810.
