Non-Compliance Description:

Humane Handling Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On 8/11/21 at approximately 1507, while observing the stunning of swine, the following noncompliance was observed: The employee performing the stunning, applied the captive bolt stunner to the head of the swine. The gun did meet the swine’s head, but the captive bolt did not fire. It did not produce immediate unconsciousness. The swine squeal from the excitement. As the employee reset the gun it was observed that the gun parts were in poor repair. The two pieces that makes the gun were sliding off its track making it not firing the gun. After the employee reset the gun, the second shot was successful, and the swine was rendered unconscious. A U.S. Rejection tag number: B37551657 was applied to the gun and the stunning employee including Mr. REDACTED was notified of this noncompliance. The employee was then able to restore the captive bolt gun with another new piece that didn’t slide off the track. The gun was re-inspected and was released. Upon the next stunning of the swine the captive bolt with the new piece worked successfully. Mr. REDACTED also indicated that a back up piece was also ordered and the gun piece that is in poor repair was removed from the kill floor. This is a noncompliance with 9CFR 313.15(a)(1)

Non-Compliance Description:

6/24/21 HATS Category VIII At approximately 1:00pm, the SPHV elected to observe the first two pigs being stunned and bled out for slaughter. Both pigs were corralled in the chute area. The first pig was effectively stunned and bled out. Upon attempting to stun the second pig, the pig moved its head at the last second and the stun was ineffective. The pig remained standing and walked forward a bit more. The employee apologized and stated that the shot was too far off center due to the pig moving its head at the last second. The employee immediately got the 2nd captive bolt, waited for the pig to stop moving, and rendered the pig insensible with the 2nd shot. The employee and plant manager were notified of the noncompliance. The head of the pig was looked at by USDA and confirmed that the first shot was off center. The proffered preventative measure was that when killing pigs, the smaller area of the chute will be used to minimize movement as much as possible. This is noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1).

Non-Compliance Description:

Humane Handling Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On 5/25/21 at approximately 1325, while observing the stunning of a bovine, the following noncompliance was observed: The employee performing the stunning applied the captive bolt stunner to the head of the bovine and it fired. The position of the captive bolt was not in the center of the head. The bovine moved its head left to right and attempted to turn around. The plant employee then applied a second shot in the center of the head which rendered the animal unconscious. Upon head examination, the first shot was very low due to the bovine moving at the last moment. The kill floor lead, production lead and the owner was notified of this noncompliance and it would be documented. No regulatory control action was taken due to the immediate action by the employee.
