Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category VIII- Stunning Effectiveness On May 24th, 2021, at approximately 0830 hours while performing humane handling verification activities at EST. M17810 IPP observed the following Noncompliance: A pig was brought from the holding pen to the stunning box. A plant employee administered a captive bolt stun to the head of the pig, while doing so the pig moved its head slightly which caused the employee to miss the target stunning area. The pig vocalized and did not go down and remained sensible. Plant employee immediately reloaded the captive bolt and administered a second stun to the pigs head that caused the animal to fall to the ground, which was effective in rendering the animal insensible/unconscious. IPP observed the head of the pig and confirmed the first shot was off and above the targeted stun area, the second shot was right on center of target area. Mr. REDACTED was notified of the stunning noncompliance at the time of the incident and the failure to comply with the regulatory requirement of 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1). A review of the NR file shows no similar noncompliance within the last 90 days. Failure to address corrective actions in a timely manner may lead to further regulatory control actions per 9 CFR 500.1
