While, I CSI REDACTED, was conducting a humane handling verification of HATS categories IV and VII at 0725 hours the following non-compliance was observed in pen 5. The drain cover that is approximately 6”x6”, was laying off to the side of the pen floor, exposing a metal mesh catch pan and the drain approximately 4 inches in diameter. This poses the risk of one of the hogs in the pen injuring its leg if they were to get it caught in the drain. No animal were observed to be injured. This is a non-compliance of 9 CFR 313.1(a). Plant manager REDACTED and owner REDACTED were notified of this non-compliance. This NR is associated to NR #QGH5608062716N-1 issued on 6/16/22. The preventive measures from the associated noncompliance have not been effective in preventing future reoccurrences of similar noncompliances. The prevention measure that the establishment took was replacing the original drain covers with a heavy more durable drain cover from the manufacturer.

While verifying HATS category IV at approximately 7:30 a.m. I observed that there was no drain cover in a pen which contained 10 hogs. One of the hogs was observed stepping into the drain and back out, but there were no injuries observed on any of the hogs. REDACTED was verbally notified of the noncompliance and this serves as written notification. A similar noncompliance #QGH3813062906 was issued on 6/6/22 and the two will be linked. The plant has not yet responded to the NR issued on 6/6/22.

At approximately 2:15pm while conducting livestock humane handling verification of HATS categories III and IV the following were observed in pen #3. 1) The water tank is approximately 18 inches high. In this pen there were 4 hogs, 2 of which were smaller and short legged. It does not appear that the 2 smaller hogs would be able to reach the level of the water tank. This is not compliant with 9 CFR 313.2(e). 2) The approximately 6x6inch drain cover was laying on the floor, exposing the drain pipe which is approximately 4 inches in diameter. This poses a risk of one of the hogs in the pen injuring a leg if they got it caught in the drain. This is not compliant with 9 CFR 313.1(a). Owner, REDACTED, was notified verbally of the noncompliance and this is written notification.
