Livestock Humane Handling Category VIII - Stunning Effectiveness At approximately 11 am on July 27, the following noncompliance was observed. While standing in the process room which is adjacent to the slaughter floor, I heard the stunner say "firing" and heard a gun shot. I then observed into the slaughter floor and stun box. A gun shot stun with a .22 mag rifle shot had been applied to the head of a steer (under 30 month). I observed the steer was on the floor and then began rising on its front two legs and attempting an upright position when the stunner said "fire" and I exited to the process room as another .22 mag stun shot was immediately applied. I went back to the kill floor and observed the steer was down and there was no sign of consciousness. The steer remained unconscious throughout the bleeding process. During examination of the skull, I observed two bullet holes in the skull. I informed Establishment Owner REDACTED of the noncompliance. This is noncompliant with 9 CFR 313.16(a) (1). Review of the past 12 months showed no similar noncompliance.
