HATS Category VIII - Stunning Effectiveness On December 28, 2021, at approximately 1310, while performing humane handling verification activities, CSI REDACTED observed that a plant employee moved a market swine weighing about 250lbs in the knock box for head-only stunning with an electrical stunner. CSI REDACTED observed stunning from the front of the pen while the stunner was standing on a stepping stool on the side of the pen which is about 5 feet tall. During the first stunning attempt, the swine fell down and then vocalized and immediately got back up again. During the second stunning attempt the swine was able to move enough to lead to an incorrect placement of the stunning prongs. The second stun occurred about 4cm away from the target location and closer to the neck. The pig vocalized and this second attempt was also ineffective. The plant employee readjusted himself to allow more of his body to reach into the pen, then reached in for a third stunning attempt. At this point, the probe was applied at the appropriate location and the swine went down and was stunned appropriately. CSI REDACTED notified the plant employee of the Regulatory control action was taken with a Retain tag# B2681191 applied the tag to the stun box. CSI REDACTED then Immediately left the slaughter floor and called SPHV Dr. REDACTED to notify them of the noncompliance.
