Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category IV – Handling During Ante-mortem Inspection At approximately 7:50AM on January 4th while performing a Livestock Humane Handling task, HATS Category IV Handling During Ante-mortem inspection I observed a large 2ft x 6ft piece of broken lumber with a sharp jagged edge to be exposed in pen#5. Upon closer inspection I observed a large sharp pointed rusty metal nail protruding from the area where the missing portion of board had broken off. This broken portion of wood and sharp metal nail is attached to the door of pen number 5. This is a noncompliance in violation of 9 CFR 313.1(a) which states that “[livestock pens] shall be free from sharp or protruding objects which may, in the opinion of the inspector, cause injury or pain to the animals”. When I showed Plant Manager Mr. REDACTED this noncompliance, he immediately removed all the animals from this holding pen and implemented corrective actions, therefore no regulatory control action was taken.
