HATS Category IV -Handling During Ante-mortem Inspection At approximately 7:10AM on June 13, while performing a Livestock Humane Handling task, HATS Category IV Handling During Ante-mortem inspection, I observed in Pen 1, a wooden feeder missing a strip of wood that attaches to the bottom of the feeder. Upon closer inspection, I observed a large sharp pointed metal nail protruding from the area where the missing portion of board had broken off. This is a noncompliance in violation of 9 CFR 313.1(a) which states that “livestock pens shall be free from sharp or protruding objects which may, in the opinion of the inspector, cause injury or pain to the animals” When I showed this noncompliance to the Slaughter Floor Manager, he immediately implemented corrective actions, therefore no regulatory control action was taken.
