HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On July 7, 2022, at approximately 0825 hours Dr. REDACTED while observing the stunning process observed the following noncompliance. REDACTED, Slaughter Supervisor announced the readiness to captive bolt stun one of the two hogs in the knock box. After a brief time, he fired the captive bolt gun and immediately the hog vocalized and jumped up and turned around. Mr. REDACTED immediately reacted to the ineffective stunning attempt and grabbed the pre-loaded backup .357 rifle and administered an effective shot rendering the hog insensible. He also then after reloading rendered the second hog in the knock box insensible with the rifle. Dr. REDACTED verified with Mr. REDACTED that the initial blow of the captive bolt gun had struck the hog in the head. There were two holes present in the hog’s forehead. Mr. REDACTED was notified both verbally at the time of the incident and in writing with this NR of the establishment’s failure to comply with the regulatory requirements of 9 CFR 313. 15(a)(1).

On February 17th , 2022, at approximately 0855 hours, while observing an establishment employee trimming a carcass on the final rail, Inspector REDACTED heard a pig vocalized after the first stun with a captive bolt gun. Inspector REDACTED immediately turned around and observed REDACTED-Slaughter Floor Supervisor immediately grabbed a .357 rifle and apply a second shot to render the animal unconscious. The employee, that was doing the stunning today, had been trained in stunning and was substituting for Mr. REDACTED while Mr. REDACTED skinned carcasses. The operator said that the animal moved before the shot, which prevent a single blow to render the animal unconscious. Inspector REDACTED verbally notified Mr. REDACTED of the Humane Handling noncompliance, both verbally and now in writing with this NR for failure to rendered the animal unconscious with a minimum excitement and discomfort.
