On Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at approximately 8:15am at Three Lakes Farm Establishment M47333, IPP observed a humane handling non-compliance during routine slaughter of cattle. The animal was restrained in the head gate, establishment owner then use his firearm to attempt to render the steer unconscious. The steer stood there after the first blow to the head, blood immediately start running from the steer’s nose as he stood still conscious (no vocalization but eye and head movement and breathing). Establishment owner took immediate corrective action by delivering a second blow. The steer continued to stand and was fully conscious. The establishment owner delivered a third blow and the steer went down rendering him unconscious. Establishment owner delivered a 4th security knock. Due to immediate corrective actions, no reject tag was placed on the stunning area and slaughter proceeded. This non-compliance violates regulation 313.16 (a) (1). On postmortem examination it was confirmed that there were four points of entry into the steer’s skull.

On Monday, January 31st, 2022 at approximately 8:00 AM at 3 Lakes Farm Establishment M47333, IPP observed a humane handling non-compliance during routine slaughter of cattle. 1 steer was moved into the stunning area. The animal was restrained in the head gate. The employee used a firearm to attempt to render the steer unconscious. The steer fell to the ground with the first blow to the head. However, this shot did not render him unconscious and the steer vocalized and had purposeful eye movement. The same employee took immediate corrective action by delivering a second blow with the firearm to the steer’s head and rendered the steer unconscious. Due to immediate corrective actions, no reject tag was placed on the stunning area and slaughter proceeded. This non-compliance violates regulation 313.16 (a) (1). On postmortem examination it was confirmed that there were two points of entry into the steer’s skull.

On Friday, January 28th, 2022 at approximately 8:05 AM at 3 Lakes Farm Establishment M47333, IPP observed a humane handling non-compliance during routine slaughter of cattle. 1 steer was moved into the stunning area. The animal was not restrained in the head gate. The employee used a firearm to attempt to render the steer unconscious. The first blow to the steer’s head did not render him unconscious and the steer continued to remain upright and move around the stunning area. The steer did not vocalize and a small amount of blood was observed coming from the animal’s nostrils. The same employee took immediate corrective action by delivering a second blow with the firearm to the steer’s head and rendered the steer unconscious. Due to immediate corrective actions, no reject tag was placed on the stunning area and slaughter proceeded. The head gate will be utilized with subsequent cattle presented for slaughter. This non-compliance violates regulation 313.16 (a) (1). On postmortem examination it was confirmed that there were two points of entry into the steer’s skull.
