Category VIII - Stunning Effectiveness: On 2/9/2022 at approximately 0835 hours while performing Humane Handling Task on the slaughter floor the following noncompliance was observed. A establishment employee was attempting to stun a steer with a rifle in the knock box. The first shot did not render the animal unconscious. The animal continued to stand but did not vocalize. The establishment employee reloaded the firearm and shot again within 2-4 seconds. The second attempt rendered the animal unconscious. The animal dropped to the ground and did not show any signs of consciousness. The animal remained unconscious through the shackling, hoisting and bleeding steps. This is a noncompliance with regulation 313.16(a)(1) Immediate unconsciousness (gunshot). REDACTED was notified of this noncompliance verbally.
