Category VIII - Stunning Effectiveness: On 9/22/2023 at approximately 11:00 hours while performing Humane Handling Task on the slaughter floor the following noncompliance was observed. An establishment employee was attempting to stun the last dairy cow of the day with a firearm in the knock box. The animal was not haltered in the head lock because they were having issues with the operation of the head lock. The first shot did not render the animal unconscious. The animal continued to stand but did not vocalize. The establishment employee reloaded the firearm and shot again within 2-4 seconds. The second attempt rendered the animal unconscious. The animal dropped to the ground and did not show any signs of consciousness. The animal remained unconscious through the shackling, hoisting and bleeding steps. The establishment employee skinned the head to observe the bullet holes. The first shot was approximately 1/2 inch low of center. The second shot which rendered the dairy cow unconscious was 1/2 inch higher than the first shot. Reject tag No. B31794761 was placed on the headlock. This is a noncompliance with regulation 313.16(a)(1) Immediate unconsciousness (gunshot). REDACTED was notified of this noncompliance verbally.

An establishment employee was attempting to stun a steer with a rifle in the knock box. The first shot did not render the animal unconscious. The animal continued to stand and vocalize. The establishment employee reloaded the firearm and shot again within 2-4 seconds. The second attempt rendered the animal unconscious. The animal dropped to the ground and did not show any signs of consciousness. The animal remained unconscious through the shackling, hoisting and bleeding steps. The establishment employee skinned the head to observe the bullet hole. The first shot was approximately 1 inch low of center. The second shot which rendered the steer unconscious was 1 inch higher than the first shot. This is a noncompliance with regulation 313.16(a)(1) Immediate unconsciousness (gunshot).
