Livestock Humane Handling HATS Category VIII Stunning Effectiveness. 9CFR313.16(a)(1) On Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at approximately 0950, while observing market swine stunning, the following non-compliance occurred: Establishment M-8855 was using their alternative stunning method the .22 magnum rifle for the pigs. (The establishments normal method of stunning is using the Electrical stunner to the pigs head. The stunner was not working accurately upon the establishments check before operation.) CSI REDACTED was in the designated safe area, (the offal room,) when the first stun was attempted by REDACTED, (establishment employee) using a .22 magnum rifle. After the first shot inspector looked around the corner on to the slaughter floor and observed the market swine was still standing. The establishment immediately took corrective action and reloaded the same rifle and shot the market swine a second time rendering it unconscious. CSI REDACTED was back into the offal area as the second shot was being administered. At no time did the market swine vocalize or show any distress. REDACTED, (Slaughter Forman) and REDACTED (Owner) were notified of the above non-compliance. The establishment is in non-compliance for failure to meet the regulatory requirement of 9CFR313.16(a)(1). A review of previous non-compliances for the past 90days revealed no NR's were issues for humane handling.
