Non-Compliance Description:

(Category VIII Stunning Effectiveness) On December 7,2022 at PF Meats Slaughter, Est. #47874 the following was found to be in non-compliance during slaughter operations. At approximately 9:30 a.m. establishment had an aggressive heifer in the chute vocalizing and trying to bite the stunner and get out of the restraint that it was in. The stunning operator was using a .22 Rifle with a .22 hollow point bullet to stun the animals. The first attempt was not successful. The stunner then took corrective action in rendering the aggressive animal unconscious with the .22 rifle in the presence of inspection personnel. No regulatory action was taken since immediate corrective measures were implemented by plant personnel. It is not clear if the first shot was a complete miss of the head, or if the first bullet struck the head at such an angle that resulted in a deflection of the bullet. The head was examined at post-mortem and only one bullet hole could be confirmed. There was a second mark approximately one inch below the bullet hole and inspection personnel confirmed that it was not a bullet hole. As part of the establishment’s immediate corrective action, they confirmed that the gun was in proper working order and that the bullets were maintained in a dry container. Plant Owner REDACTED was notified of non-compliance. This is a violation of Federal Meat and Poultry Regulations.
