Non-Compliance Description:

Hats Category III: Stunning Effectiveness; 313.15(a). At approximately 7:40 a.m. on November 12,2024 at PF Meat Company, Est.#47874, while performing Humane Handling Verification the inspection team observed the following noncompliance: Establishment personnel failed to effectively produce immediate unconsciousness of a market swine that was stunned with a captive bolt. Employee immediately used the backup device of a .22 rifle and effectively rendered the swine unconscious with a subsequent stun. The swine neither vocalized nor showed distress between the initial and subsequent stun attempt. The swine was bigger is size than normal. After the swine was rendered unconscious plant management stated that the .22 rifle should have been used first than the captive bolt. Regulatory control action was not taken, and this is considered a non-egregious inhumane slaughter action, as plant personnel immediately and effectively utilized their backup stunning device and did not cause unnecessary distress to the animal. Management was notified of the noncompliance at inspection.
