HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness At approximately 1235 hours on 12/21/2022, while verifying HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness, I (REDACTED) observed the following non-compliance: The stunning employee applied a penetrating, hand-held captive bolt gun to the steer’s forehead. As the bolt gun went off the steer threw its head down, remained standing, vocalized and its head continued to track the stunning employee. The stunner operator immediately administered a second stun with the back-up hand-held captive bolt gun, which was already loaded, rendering the animal insensible. The animal remained insensible throughout the rest of the process. The head was examined after skinning and was observed to have 2 holes. One hole was on midline in the poll of the skull and did not penetrate the skull fully. The second hole was approximately 1.5 inches lower on midline and penetrated the skull and brain. This is non-compliant with 9CFR 313.15(a)(1). Mr. REDACTED (Slaughter Lead) was notified verbally of this non-compliance. Mr. REDACTED (Plant Manager) was notified verbally and in writing of this non-compliance.

HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness At approximately 0745 hours on 11/7/2022, I observed the following non-compliance while verifying HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness: A hog was electrically stunned and rolled out of the knock box. The hog was unconscious when shackled and hoisted, but then fell from the shackle down to the floor. While on the floor, the hog regained consciousness, clearly vocalized, and righted itself, attempting to stand back on all fours. The establishment delivered an immediate and effective corrective action stun, rendering the animal insensible, and it remained so thereafter. This is non-compliant with 9CFR 313.30(a)(1). Mr. REDACTED (Slaughter Lead) was notified verbally of this non-compliance. Mr. REDACTED (Plant Manager) was notified verbally and in writing of this non-compliance.
