HATS Category III- Water and Feed Availability On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at approximately 1130 hours while performing a routine Humane Handling Verification Task, the following noncompliance was observed: There were nine (9) pigs housed in two separate pens with no water available. The water bowl was bottom up in the first pen I saw, which had 4 pigs. In the other pen, which had five pigs, the water bowl was upright but slightly slanted, and there was a very small amount of dark-brown liquid in the lower part of the bowl. I notified the plant owner Mr. REDACTED of this noncompliance. After the plant took corrective actions, the pen was reinspected and found acceptable at 1133 hours. This is not in compliance with 9 CFR 313.2(e).

HAT's Category VIII (Humane Handling of Livestock) On 10/28/2022, at approximately 0940 hours, at establishment Stoney Point Butchery M9646 while observing the stunning of a hog a noncompliance was observed. An establishment employee was attempting a first stunning attempt of a market hog standing freely in the stun box with the hand heled captive bolt gun. The captive bolt hit the market hog off center to the right side of the head only penetrating the hide leaving the hog standing. At this time the hog was not overly excited but was still able to move around the knock box. The establishment employee was attempting to reload the handheld captive bolt to perform a second stun. The kill floor supervisor then approached the knock box with a second captive bolt and, before the hog became overly excited, was able to perform a second stunning attempt which effectively rendered the hog unconscious. Kill floor supervisor REDACTED and establishment manager REDACTED were notified of the noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1).
