313.15(a)(1)
On September 19th, 2023, at approximately 09:25hrs while conducting a Humane Handling (HATS) task, category VIII (Stunning Effectiveness), I, CSI REDACTED observed the following noncompliance. While on the slaughter floor an establishment employee attempted to stun a market swine in the slaughter chute. After delivering the initial stun with a captive bolt stunning device, the animal vocalized and remained standing with its eyes opened. The establishment employee immediately attempted a second stun using back up firearm, that was also ineffective, the animal remained standing with it eyes open. The employee immediately attempted another stun with the backup firearm that was effective and rendered the animal unconscious. A U.S. Reject tag No. B43334952 was placed on the knock box. Establishment Owner REDACTED was notified verbally, and this record serves as written notice of the establishments failure to meet the regulatory requirements of 9 CFR313.15(a)(1). On September 11th, 2023, at approximately 11:50hrs, while conducting a Humane Handling (HATS) task, Category VIII (Stunning Effectiveness), I, CSI REDACTED observed the following noncompliance. While on the slaughter floor and establishment employee attempted to stun a market swine in the slaughter chute. After delivering the initial stun with a captive bolt stunning device, the animal vocalized and remain standing in the chute with its eyes open. The establishment employee delivered and immediate effective stun with a backup firearm that rendered the animal unconscious. A US Reject tag No. B43334954 was placed on the knock box pending the establishments corrective actions. Establishment owner REDACTED was notified verbally and this record serves as written notice of the establishments failure to meet the regulatory requirements of 9 CFR313.15(a)(1).After reviewing the records for the previous records, this record is being associated with GFU5611090806N/1.
313.16(a)(1)
On September 5th, 2023, at approximately 08:45hrs, while conducting a Humane Handling (HATS) task, Category VIII (Stunning Effectiveness), I, CSI REDACTED observed the following noncompliance. While on the slaughter floor, an establishment employee attempted to stun a lamb in the slaughter chute, with a captive bolt device. Due to equipment failure, when the captive bolt was fired the bolt did not eject from the device. The animal in the chute did not make any sudden movements, vocalize, or show any signs of harm or discomfort. The establishment then decided to use a firearm to administer the stun to the animal. After the first shot the animal was not rendered unconscious and did not completely go down. The front legs lowered while the back legs remained standing, the head remained upright. The establishment employee immediately fired a second shot that rendered the animal unconscious. A US Reject tag NO. B43334950 was placed on the knock box pending the establishment’s corrective actions. Establishment owner REDACTED was notified verbally, and this document serves as written notice of the establishments failure to meet the regulatory requirements of 9 CFR 313. After review of the records, no associations can be made at this time.
