On November 28th, 2023 at approximately 08:45hrs, while conducting a Humane Handling (HATS) task, category VIII (Stunning Effectiveness) I, REDACTED observed the following noncompliance. While on the slaughter floor an establishment employee attempted to stun a beef in the slaughter chute. The animal was in a head catch, and had pushed forward in the chute, allowing it to move its head a few inches from side to side. After delivering the initial stun, the animal remained standing with it eyes open. The establishment employee attempted a second stun with a firearm. The firearm did not immediately discharge, so the employee cocked the firearm, revolved the cylinder and discharged the firearm. The second stun was ineffective, the animal remained standing with his eyes open. Immediately after the firearm attempt, the employee attempted a third stun with a captive bolt that was effective and rendered the animal unconscious. U.S Reject tag NO. B43334940 was applied to the knock box. Establishment owner REDACTED was notified verbally, and this record serves as written notice of the establishments failure to meet the regulatory requirements of 9 CFR313.15(a)(1). After reviewing the records for the previous 90 days, this record is being associated with GFU0512091719N/1.
