Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category II: Truck Unloading: HATS Category VI: Electric Prod/Alternative Object Use On 05/06/ 2024, at approximately 7:05 am, while conducting the Livestock Humane Handling Verification task, I, the CSI, observed the following non-compliance. I observed a steer standing at the opening of the stock trailer to be unloaded. The truck driver was inside the trailer using a hand-held battery-operated electric prod (hot shot) to prod the animal. I observed the driver prodding the steer at least 10 times: on the rump, sides, neck and abdomen of the animal. I verbally requested him to stop prodding the steer. Additionally, an establishment employee, also verbally requested for the truck driver to stop prodding the steer and allow the other animals to lead the steer off the trailer. However, the truck driver persisted in prodding the steer with the hand-held battery-operated electric prod. Consequently, the animal began to kick with its hind legs and vocalize. During unloading, this animal was excessively prodded. I immediately informed the pen manager and the SPHV. At approximately 1:10 pm, I placed a U.S RETAINED tag NO. B-45696811 at the chute as directed by the SPHV and Denver DDM. I verbally notified the QA manager that I would be documenting a non-compliance. There have been no noncompliance records issued for the same root cause in the past 90 days. This establishment operates under a robust systematic approach to the humane handling of livestock.
