Non-Compliance Description:

On Thursday 9/26/24 at approximately 7:00am, I was performing an ante-mortem inspection (HATS Category IV Verification Task), when the following was observed: 10 hogs were present at the time of inspection, separated between 3 pens. One pen contained a trough of water, but it was inaccessible due to the opening being turned against the bars of the pen. The other two pens did not have containers of water available. This is in noncompliance with HATS Category III Verification Task (Water and Feed Availability), and with the following regulation: 9 CFR 313.2(e) Handling of livestock - "Animals shall have access to water in all holding pens and, if held longer than 24 hours, access to feed..." Slaughter employees were informed of this noncompliance, and immediately turned the water trough around so it was accessible and provided containers with water to the other two pens.”
