On 05/09/2024 while I, CSI REDACTED, was performing the livestock humane handling task, the following regulatory noncompliance was observed: An establishment employee brought a market pig into the stunning box. At approximately 1400 hours while watching the establishment employee attempt to stun the pig with a captive bolt gun, the animal moved as the captive bolt was discharged resulting in a mis-stun. The animal remained conscious, standing, and vocalizing. The establishment employee loaded the backup rifle. The employee returned to the stunning box and waited for the pig to settle and stop moving. The second stun effectively rendered the animal unconscious. SPHV REDACTED was notified and examined the head on postmortem. There was a single circular depression in the skull at a correct location for stunning. Palpation of the depression revealed a hole that traveled downward towards the sinuses/snout (first stun) and one that traveled perpendicular (second stun). This fails to meet the regulatory requirements for 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1). Establishment Owner REDACTED was notified of the incident. Modern Heritage has a robust, systematic approach to humane handling.
