Non-Compliance Description:

On 09/26/2024 at approximately 0800 hours, I, Dr. REDACTED (SPHV) observed the following noncompliance while verifying humane handling: Three shots with a captive bolt were required to render a beef cow unconscious. After the first two consecutive shots the cow remained standing and vocalized. The establishment took immediate effective corrective actions by applying a third shot with the captive bolt which effectively rendered the cow unconscious. Regulatory control action (RCA) was taken, and further harvest was stopped by placing US Reject tag B41-987555 on the stunning chute. Mr. REDACTED (General Manager) was notified of the noncompliance and RCA. Upon postmortem examination of the skull, I observed three distinct points of contact in the skull. These observations are failure to meet the regulatory requirements of 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1).

Non-Compliance Description:

On 07/08/2024 at approximately 1106 hours, the following humane handling noncompliance was observed while I, SPHV REDACTED was making observations on the harvest floor. A goat was brought onto the harvest floor where two establishment employees placed the animal on its side though it remained moving. The employee performing the ritual cut did not restrain the head. When the ritual cut was attempted it did not penetrate deeply. Upon release, the animal stood back up and walked away from the employees. As the animal was walking away, the employee performing the ritual cut swiped the knife at the animal’s neck as it passed by him, making contact but still not successfully rendering the animal unconscious. The animal continued to walk away and slipped through an opening in the wall to another area of the harvest floor before ultimately being restrained and the ritual cut performed to successfully render the animal unconscious. Regulatory control action (RCA) was taken and further harvest was stopped by placing US Reject tag no. B41-987514 on the stunning chute and tag no. B41-987515 on the chute door remote. Mr. REDACTED (General Manager) was notified of the noncompliance and RCA.
